According to a recent blog by Leading Edge, more than 100,000 renters ages 65 and older, and almost 450,000 renters ages 55 to 64, report they will likely be evicted when the national moratorium ends. Additionally, 300,000 people ages 65 and older and 1 million ages 55 to 64 said they were behind on their rent. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 provides $25 billion for emergency rental assistance, and The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 provides another $21.5 billion, however, implementation of the rental assistance programs has been slow. The author recommends state and local governments scale staffing immediately to process applications quickly and to help prevent unnecessary evictions.
