Veteran Volunteers Serve Their Communities During Pandemic
Team Rubicon and The Mission Continues support their communities
The Mission Continues and Team Rubicon, are encouraging low-risk veterans to answer the call to serve their communities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Through Team Rubicon's “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program, veteran volunteers support vulnerable community members by delivering food, medicine, and other supplies; providing essential transportation; and helping with other day-to-day tasks that higher-risk individuals can't do. Team Rubicon grey shirts coordinate volunteers to assist at food banks and work with food delivery services, such as Meals on Wheels; manage quarantine sites and shelters; coordinate and organize drive-thru testing sites; and provide coordination for other disaster response activities. The Mission Continues launched "Operation Nourish" to combat food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic and help to build capacity in other non-profit organizations. Veteran volunteers grow, collect, and distribute food to people in under-resourced communities. As an added benefit, service and volunteerism have proven to be effective interventions that improve mental health outcomes for veterans.
